Sony has officially unveiled the latest handheld gaming accessory designed to complement the PlayStation 5 console. The Sony PlayStation Portal is a specialized handheld gaming device created exclusively for the purpose of remotely playing games from your PS5.

The PlayStation Portal is equipped with prominent controllers on either side, resembling Sony’s PS5 DualSense controllers. These controllers support adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, providing a gaming experience akin to using a dedicated DualSense controller with PS5 games. Additionally, the PlayStation Portal has the capability to play media, featuring a dedicated section on the homescreen that mirrors your PS5 and facilitates media playback.

Features of the PlayStation Portal

  • The LCD screen has a max 1080p resolution and max refresh of 60Hz
  • It supports Wi-fi 5 (802.11ac)
  • 4,370mAh non-removable battery that charges via USB-C
  • Top-firing stereo speakers
  • A 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Support for Sony’s new PlayStation Link-enabled headphones for lossless audio

PROS

1. Seamless Remote Play

The PlayStation Portal provides the flexibility of remote play, enabling you to stream games from your PS5 to a handheld device. This liberates you from being confined to your console setup, allowing you to carry your gaming experience anywhere using a Wi-Fi network.

2. Integrated DualSense Experience

A standout feature is the incorporation of the advanced capabilities of the DualSense controller. The Portal integrates haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, delivering an immersive gaming experience that distinguishes it from smartphones and tablets.

3. Impressive Display

The PlayStation Portal features an 8-inch LCD screen with a 1080p resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. This ensures high-definition visuals that faithfully capture the caliber of games developed by renowned studios.

CONS

1. Lack of Independent Gaming

In contrast to its predecessors, such as the PSP or PS Vita, the PlayStation Portal lacks the ability to independently run games. It is entirely dependent on the streaming capabilities of the PS5, which restricts its usability for individuals without a PS5 console.

2. Reliance on Wi-Fi

The gameplay experience on the Portal relies heavily on a robust Wi-Fi connection. Under limited or unstable network conditions, latency issues may arise, detracting from the overall quality of the gameplay experience.
