Lecturers did not attend to students at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, on Monday, following the ongoing strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC.
DAILY POST reports that the organized Labour on Monday shut down the country as the Federal Government disagreed with its proposal on a new minimum wage for workers.
Although the government offered N60,000 as a new minimum wage, Organized Labour rejected it, insisting on N494,000.
They said the N60,000 offered by government was unacceptable based on high inflation and the country’s difficult economic conditions.
In protest, Labour closed all public offices on Monday, including schools, the National Assembly, airports and other facilities.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities also joined the strike nationwide.
It was observed that the UNN branch of ASUU also mobilized its members to comply with the NLC and TUC directive.
Chairman ASUU-UNN, Oyibo Eze, told reporters that no academic activity will be held in any department until the strike is over.
“We have mobilized our members in UNN to ensure effective and total compliance with the nationwide indefinite strike.
“We have been moving around in UNN to enforce total compliance and ensure no academic activity is held in any department until the strike is suspended,” he said.
