Veterinary officials of the Adamawa State Government have started mass vaccination of cattle in several local government areas after a disease killed more than a thousand cows in neighbouring Taraba State.
The mass vaccination in Adamawa State which began at the weekend targets LGAs sharing borderlines with Taraba State and Cameroon Republic after the disease named haemorrhagic septicemia killed more than 1000 cows in Taraba.
The Adamawa State Commissioner in charge of Livestock and Aquaculture, Tijjani Marksha who led a delegation of ministry officials and veterinary doctors for the flag-off of the vaccination exercise at Gongoshi in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area, recalled that the dreaded cattle disease said to mostly affect cows in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State had spread to some other LGAs in that state and led to the cattle deaths.
“To prevent that from Adamawa territory, the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture put all its divisional veterinary officers and other personnel on red alert and set machinery in motion for the mass vaccination exercise,” the commissioner said.
The Director of the State Veterinary Services, Dr Berthilimous Nyalas gave the names of the targeted LGAs for the first phase of the vaccination to include Numan, Demsa, Lamurde, Toungo, Fufore, Maiha, Mubi North and Mubi South and the Mayo Belwa where the exercise has now started.
Nyalas said the nine LGAs to be reached were selected because of their proximity to both Taraba and the Cameroon Republic.
In a vote of thanks on behalf of other cattle owners, the Ardo Kwanan Lauje, Gonhoshi Ardo Abfu Gajere, said the current vaccination programme is the first that the government would initiate without the cattle owners making a request.
